HSA & FSA

Use Your HSA or FSA for Massage at Moonstone

Moonstone accepts HSA & FSA cards for massage therapy. To pay, just use your HSA/FSA card at checkout. It processes like a standard debit card. We provide an itemized receipt for your records.

Eligibility

Massage is not automatically eligible on all plans. With a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for a diagnosed condition, you may be able to use pre-tax funds, and that letter typically covers a year of visits once it is issued. See your HSA/FSA plan administrator before your appointment to confirm eligibility.

Moonstone is partnered with Burst to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity for qualified individuals at no additional cost to you. (We are still setting this up. For now, the letter costs $20, and we will deduct that $20 from the price of your first session.)

Conditions often reviewed for an LMN

This list is for reference only. It is not exhaustive, and listing a condition here does not mean you will qualify. A licensed provider decides based on your evaluation. Other diagnosed conditions may also be considered.

  • Chronic back or neck pain (ongoing or recurrent pain lasting 3 or more months)
  • Sciatica / nerve-related pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic tension headaches or migraines
  • Soft tissue injuries, strains, or sprains
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Symptoms or side effects related to cancer or cancer treatment
  • Arthritis-related joint pain
  • Anxiety or stress-related conditions (when clinically diagnosed)
  • TMJ (jaw pain/dysfunction)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Already have an appointment?

Confirm your upcoming booking to request a letter.

How it works

  1. Reserve your appointment at Moonstone

Click on “Book & Request my LMN” from above and schedule an appointment as normal. After booking with us you will be prompted to complete the next step with Burst. If you have already scheduled an appointment click on “Find my appointment”.

  2. Complete a health questionnaire through Burst

A short, secure intake reviewed by a licensed physician. There is no cost to apply. All costs are covered by Moonstone.

  3. Receive your letter

If approved, the letter will be issued to you within 24 hours from when you apply.

  4. Pay at Moonstone

Use your HSA or FSA card at checkout, or save an itemized receipt for reimbursement. Your LMN is good for 12 months and works with any therapist at Moonstone.

Pay with your HSA or FSA card at checkout

Once you have an LMN, you can use the card on your HSA or FSA at time of service, the same way you would any other card. Book as usual and let the desk know you are using those funds.

Paying and receipts

Booking soon? LMNs typically take up to 24 hours to process. As long as you apply on or before your appointment date and the letter is approved, that visit can be covered. We recommend booking at least 72 hours in advance so the letter is ready in time.

Need reimbursement

If you choose, Burst can handle the reimbursement claim on your behalf, provide plan-specific documentation, and appeal denied claims. If you submit it yourself, ask for an itemized receipt.

FAQ

What is an HSA or FSA?

Both are accounts that let you set aside money for health care before income tax is taken out.

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is paired with a high-deductible health plan. The money is yours: it rolls over every year, stays with you if you change jobs, and in many plans can be invested and grow tax-free.

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is set up through your employer. You choose an amount each year and it comes out of your paycheck pre-tax. Most FSAs are use-it-or-lose-it, meaning funds you do not spend by the plan deadline are forfeited. Some plans offer a short grace period or let a small amount carry over, so check with your administrator.

Why should I use my HSA or FSA at Moonstone?

Because it makes the same massage meaningfully cheaper. Money in an HSA or FSA was never taxed, so you skip federal income tax, usually Social Security and Medicare tax (7.65%), and in most states, state income tax too. For many people that adds up to 25% to 40% in savings.

Put another way: to pay for a $100 session from your regular paycheck, you might need to earn $130 to $150 before taxes. Paying from your HSA or FSA, that same session costs $100 of pre-tax money.

If you have an FSA, there is a second reason. Any balance left at the end of the plan year is usually forfeited. Instead of scrambling to spend it on things you do not need, you can put it toward care that treats real pain and stress. With an HSA nothing expires, but spending on qualifying care still stretches every dollar further.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your savings depend on your tax bracket, your state, and your plan rules.

Does insurance cover this?

This is not insurance billing. An HSA or FSA is a pre-tax account you already have. If a licensed provider issues a Letter of Medical Necessity for a qualifying condition, you may be able to use those funds for massage. Coverage still depends on your plan administrator.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for a membership?

Yes. With a Letter of Medical Necessity on file, you can use your HSA or FSA card to pay for a Moonstone membership, just like a single session. The letter is good for one year, so it covers your membership visits during that time. Coverage still depends on your plan administrator, so keep your receipts in case they ask.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Not from Moonstone. After we confirm an upcoming appointment, you can request a letter through Burst, or ask your own doctor or chiropractor to write one. Eligibility is based on a medical evaluation.

How long does approval take?

Through Burst, a letter is typically issued within 24 hours. Book first. As long as you apply on or before your appointment date and the letter is approved, that visit can be covered. We recommend booking at least 72 hours in advance so the letter is ready in time.

What if I cancel after a letter is issued?

If a Letter of Medical Necessity is issued and the appointment is canceled, you may be charged $35 for the letter in addition to cancelation fees as part of our standard rescheduling and canceling policy. Cancelation fees apply only to changes made to an appointment with less than 24 hours notice.

What if I am not approved?

You can still book and pay for massage as usual. An LMN is not guaranteed. If a provider does not issue a letter, HSA or FSA funds generally cannot be used for that wellness visit.

Is my information private?

The health questionnaire and any medical details go directly to Burst’s independent licensed provider (or to your own clinician). Moonstone does not receive, review, or store that intake.

Eligibility is determined solely by Burst’s licensed healthcare providers, or by your own clinician. Moonstone does not determine or guarantee HSA or FSA eligibility. Please consult your plan administrator with questions about your specific coverage.
